Gökberk Talu - Mr. English

Welcome back, I am Gökberk Yasin Talu, also known as Mr. English. I want to tell you a little bit about myself and the work I do. I come from a family of civil servants with two children. My mother is a housewife and my father is a retired military officer. I have one sister who is three years older than me. She is an English teacher like me. Teaching English is not abundant in our family, only my sister and I are English teachers. Of course, my aunts are teachers too, but not language teachers.

I graduated from Bilkent University, Department of American Culture and Literature. I have been teaching English since my student life in this department. Officially, I have been a teacher since 2008, but unofficially, I have been in this profession since 2004. I did not graduate from an English Language Teaching department, but to certify myself, I received English Pedagogical Formation Training at Hacettepe University’s Faculty of Education. That was not enough, I got CELTA training (Certificate of Teaching English to Adults) from Cambridge University. I try to train myself as much as possible in the field of teaching.

I have been interested in distance education for a long time. I taught private English lessons to both Turks and people of other countries on different platforms. In the last three years, I have attempted to do various online education projects. Most of them were not successful, maybe I wasted a few years, but still, I didn’t quail. Mr. English was one of my early unsuccessful projects, but I decided to bring it back to life.

My first and successful online education platform was Turkishaholic, where I taught Turkish to foreigners. My website is still open right now and I have many training videos. I think I posted over 100 videos. If you are wondering, I shared the link below this article.

My purpose for creating Mr. English is the same as my Turkish education platform Turkishaholic. English education in Turkey is really bad. I have been teaching English for a long time and many of my students suffer from the same problem. The majority of teachers cannot both teach English and if they can, they teach this language based on hearsay and without any scientific aspect. I wanted to change that and that's why I founded Mr. English. I don't want to explain what I have to offer here in Mr. English because I already have an article about it. You can access this article from the links below.

Mr. English is a very new platform and (in my opinion) there is not a platform like this one. This platform will take some time to mature, of course, but hopefully, soon it will be an educational point that everyone (people from every country) can benefit from. At first, I thought of making this site only in Turkish, but then I gave up on this idea. Because I had shot more than 30+ hours worth of training videos in Turkish, I didn’t want to reshoot them in English. While thinking about what I can do, I decided to prepare subtitles for these videos, English explanations, and English documentation for the whole lesson. I hope my foreign students who visit this site will not be troubled by Turkish explanations and I will contribute something to them.

I would like to translate this site and my training videos into many languages in the future, but now I can only serve in Turkish and English. If you want to help me do this, please contact me.

I hope you use Mr. English with pleasure and my knowledge will help you. If you have a question in mind, you can contact me from both the forums and my e-mail address. Thank you again for visiting, take care!
